The Center for Gender, Diversity and Inclusion will hold a film screening. This time, we will screen the documentary \u201cPrison Circle\u201d directed by Kaori Sakagami. This is the first documentary film in Japan that allowed cameras into a prison. The film focuses on a dialogue-based rehabilitation program at the Shimane Asahi Rehabilitation Program Center, the prison where the film takes place. With this film, we would like to encourage everyone to think about the ideal society in which every individual can live with dignity.

Overview: A documentary film set at the Shimane Asahi Rehabilitation Program Center, a public-private cooperative prison. The film focuses on the practice of Therapeutic Community (TC), the only rehabilitation program in a Japanese prison based on dialogue among inmates, and it depicts the progress that the inmates are making toward rehabilitation.
The film reveals the experiences behind the inmates\u2019 crimes, such as poverty, bullying, abuse, and discrimination, while also questioning the kind of education needed to encourage inmates to deal with their crimes and undergo rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Profile of Director Kaori Sakagami
Documentary filmmaker. Director, NPO Out of Frame. Upon graduating from high school, Sakagami traveled to the United States for study abroad and earned her MS in socio-economic development from the University of Pittsburgh. After traveling around South America, she returned to Japan to pursue a career as a TV documentary filmmaker. She has made films on alternative ways of dealing with violence and crime, including victim-led movements to abolish the death penalty, the rehabilitation of offenders, therapeutic communities, restorative justice, and drug courts. Her previous films include \u201cLifers: Reaching for Life Beyond the Walls\u201d (2004) and \u201cTalk Back Out Loud\u201d (2013), and she also authored the book \u201cPrison Circle\u201d (Iwanami Shoten).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
