Message from the Head of the Program

takeshi_fujino "Interdisciplinary Education Program for Applied Science and Technology in Global Environment" (hereinafter referred to as " Interdisciplinary PG") was established as a common educational program for all departments in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering in 2022. The parent organization of Interdisciplinary PG dates back to 1995, when the Department of Environmental Science and Technology was established as the first independent department without a faculty in Japan. During this period, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Kyoto Conference on Climate Change, COP3, adopted in December 1997) and the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10, adopted in December 2010) were held in Japan, setting the course for sustainable development and focusing on the protection of natural ecosystems and the interests of future generations. However, the destruction of the global environment continues, and it has become clear that current efforts to solve the problem are not sufficient. In September 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit defined the "Broad Goals for Sustainable Development: SDGs," and in December, the Paris Agreement (COP21), an international framework treaty on climate change issues after 2020, was also signed. Research and education on environmental issues have also been focused on the field of engineering, but with the aim of exploring solutions to various issues from a broader perspective, the curriculum has been designed to be accessible to people from any background, incorporating not only science but also disciplines covered in education and economics. Currently, the first cohort of Interdisciplinary PG students is international, both domestic and international, and we continue to encourage the enrollment of those who wish to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, both on and off campus. Finally, the expansion of COVID-19 have occurred in 2019, and the environmental destruction caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February are very serious, and we hope that the problem will be resolved and resolved.
