  1. OVERVIEW
  2. As a part of the International Graduate Program at Saitama University, Energy System-Information Technology Innovation (ESITI) International Professional Program at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering offers highly qualified students the opportunity to conduct research and pursue doctoral studies in the field of Engineering leading to a Doctor of Philosophy/ Engineering / Science*. This Program is designed to cover a wide range of research fields in Electrical & Electronics, Informatics and Mechanical Engineering. The program begins in April or October and requires a standard three-year residency for the completion of a doctoral degree. Classes, research supervision, theses, reports, exams, and presentations are all conducted in English. *The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, the Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.), the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree are awarded based on the content of the thesis.

    ►Number of Scholars : 8 Doctoral students
    ►Enrollment: October 2027
    ►Scholarship Benefits:

    MEXT scholarship covers application, admission and tuition fees, a monthly allowance of 148,000JPY (a supplemental regional allowance of 3,000yen per month is included)
    Also, Round-trip airfare from the awardee's home country is provided.
    MEXT scholarship is granted for up to three years based on the satisfactory performance of the Doctoral student, not extendable beyond three years.

    Eligibility
    □ Have or expect to have a Master's Degree before enrollment.
    □ A national of a country that has diplomatic relations with the Japanese Government.
    □ Be under 35 years of age as of April 1st, 2027. (i.e. born on or after April 2nd, 1992)
    □ Have excellent academic achievements.
    □ Have a proof of one’s English language proficiency, such as an indicative minimum score of English language proficiency test taken within the past two years. (i.e. 72 for TOEFL (IBT)/5.5 for IELTS or equivalent to CEFR B2 Level).
    □ Be in both good mental and physical health.
    □ Be residing outside Japan at the time of application and not a holder of Japanese nationality.
    □ Be able to arrive Saitama University by 1st October, 2027.
    □ Not an awardee of the Japanese Government Scholarship during the last three years

    ●Privately funded students

    ►Enrollment: April/October 2027
    ►The applicant who has already secured a scholarship or other financial support, please provide the certificate issued by the supporter.
    ►Students in need of financial assistance must apply for scholarships on their own before or after enrollment.

    ●Applicants who are residing in Japan at the time of application

    ►Applicants must apply for the regular admission to the Graduate School of Science and Engineering. The procedures are different from ESITI program. Such candidates are advised to contact the Graduate School directly for further details. (Click here for General Admission)
  5. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
  6. Please send the following documents to the Foreign Student Office by email before the deadline. Applicants who reach the final selection stage will be requested to send the original documents to us via an international courier service such as EMS.
    1)Application form(Form A)
    2)Field of Study and Research Plan(Form B)
    3)Official Certificate of Grades from most recent academic institution attended (Undergraduate or Graduate degree program)
    ・MUST be the original or an attested copy of the original, stating the number of credits and the year or period in which each course was completed.
    ・An explanation of the grading system must be attached (e.g., A = Excellent, B = Good, C = Fair).

    4)Official Certificate of Graduation or Expected Graduation from most recent academic institution attended (Graduate degree program)
    ・MUST be the original or attested copy of the original
    5)Abstract of thesis written for most recent academic degree awarded.
    ・MUST be a brief summary (no more than one A4 page) of the most recent thesis you wrote, or, if no thesis was written, a graduation project or term paper.
    6)Copy of passport page containing the applicant's name and date of birth or a copy of your family register or residence certificate
    7)Certificate of English Proficiency
    ・MUST be the original or attested copies of the official score of IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC or equivalent.
    ・The score must be taken within the past 2 years.
    ・Applicants whose master’s program was instructed in English may submit an official certificate or letter verifying that English was the medium of instruction instead of an English proficiency certificate.
    8)Two Letters of Recommendation
    ・MUST be addressed to "The President of Saitama University".
    ・The 1st letter must be from the Dean, or a person of equivalent or higher position, at the applicant’s school or institution.
    ・The 2nd letter can be from your supervisor or a person of equivalent.
    ・The letter may be written either on the institute’s official letterhead or using the ESITI program’s standard form.
    The letter must be sent as an email attachment by the recommender directly to the Admissions Office (rese@gr.saitama-u.ac.jp) from their official institutional email address.

    ► SELECTION CRITERIA AND PROCEDURE

    Evaluation of applications will be based on the candidate's scholastic ability and research potential assessed from previous credentials, recommendation letters and essays on specific topics. During the selection process, short-listed candidates will be contacted through internet-based interviews or other appropriate means. Details for these interviews will be sent out to short-listed candidates. A mathematics exam could be held depending on the supervisor’s demand.
    For the selection of the MEXT scholarship, after University selection procedure, the lists of nominees are sent to the MEXT Office for final approval.

  8. The courses,faculty members and their research fields of ESITI Program can be found on the page "COURSES" of this website.
    You may choose your desired course and supervisor from this list.
    Before applying, you are advised to consult with the professor you want to be instructed by. Students may not be accepted due to the retirement of the professor or any other cause.
    If necessary, please inform us of the professor’s name, and we can provide their contact details.
    Our office does not recommend any specific supervisor. Please note that applicants are expected to take the initiative to contact their desired supervisor directly.

    December 2026 ~ January 2027 notification of results to short-listed candidates,
    internet-based interviews and exam for short-listed candidates
    February, 2027 notification of results by ESITI program
    (the list of nominees is sent to MEXT for approval)
    July, 2027 official approval from MEXT & Saitama University
    October 1, 2027(tentative) Entrance Ceremony

    (B) Regular Admission April 2027(Privately funded students):

    October 31, 2026 deadline for applications
    December 2026 ~ January 2027 internet-based interviews/ notification of results/ COE & Visa application

    • Application Fee: 30,000 yen upon application
    • Admission Fee: 282,000 yen upon admission
    • Tuition Fee: 642,960 yen per year

    • Estimated living expensesn per month: prox. 120,000 to 150,000 yen
