with molecular biology

By uncovering the structures and functions of the molecules that shape life, we seek to understand the roles of genes and the mechanisms of biological phenomena, leading to a wide range of applications—this is the mission of molecular biology.

Message

Living organisms inherit traits across generations by replicating and transmitting genetic material (DNA) from parents to offspring. The information encoded in DNA is known as genetic information. This genetic information provides the essential instructions for life processes, including body formation, cellular functions, and the ability to respond and adapt to environmental changes.

Genetic information is typically expressed through the sequence of DNA → RNA → protein, a process known as the Central Dogma, which is the most fundamental concept in molecular biology. In the Department of Molecular Biology, we provide students with in-depth education on the molecular mechanisms underlying the Central Dogma, including DNA structure, gene expression, and regulatory systems, grounded in our strong tradition in biochemistry. We also engage in education and research in rapidly evolving areas such as genome science, which explores the entirety of genetic information, and in higher-order biological phenomena such as photosynthesis, environmental responses, and stress tolerance. These are critical foundations for addressing global warming and other environmental challenges.

“Why do we study at university?” This is a question we hope our students will continue to reflect upon. As faculty members, we encourage our students not only to acquire advanced scientific knowledge but also to develop a deep appreciation for the dignity of all life, and to build a strong foundation for becoming thoughtful, compassionate individuals. Through the study of molecular biology, our program aims to foster both scientific insight and human character, enriching each student’s growth as a person.
